Welcome to the Secret Society of Happy People
Founded: August 1998

Purpose: The Secret Society of Happy People encourages the expression of happiness and discourages parade-raining. Parade-rainers are those people who don't want to hear your happy news. And no, we don't tell people to be happy if they aren't or how to be happy.

Motto: If you're happy and you know it ... tell somebody!

Members: More than 7,000 people in 34 countries have joined the Secret Society of Happy People.

  • Taken For Granted Happiness
Even people with the happiest of happy dispositions navigate a world full of chaos. We do jobs that aren't filled with tasks that bring smiles to our face; we have relationships full of ups and downs; we search for answers to all sorts of difficult questions; sad things happen to us and the people we love; uncertainty is a cloud that follows everyone; and we meet people who just try to push our cranky button.

Why? Because this is everyone's life. The difference in either the naturally happy or the learned happy is that we try to accept, understand or learn from the chaos. That's what makes life happier: navigating the chaos with a sense of purpose.

But in the middle of our happy but chaotic filled life, there are many happy moments that we just take for granted. We have common ones: breathing, walking, running, thinking new thoughts, laughing, seeing a sunrise and the full moon, hearing words, songs, and birds chirping, the feel of a hot shower or hug, feeling--even when the feelings aren't so happy, and especially when they are happy. Most of these are miraculous experiences that we get for just being human.

If we literally counted each of these taken for granted moments of happiness, how many more happy moments would you have in a day? I'm willing to bet, more than the chaotic ones.

Tomorrow morning, when you wake up and stretch, and take a deep breathe, think, that's two happy moments that I usually take for granted most days. Wow, what a happy way to start the day.

  • Something to Celebrate
It's a rare week that virtually anyone, anywhere can find something to celebrate. Making for many happy moments in the coming days for many people.

Of course, the world is celebrating the Winter Olympics. Even if you don't like sports most of us can't help but cheer for the athletes from our country or for our favorite sport. Tune in and watch the quests for perfection and gold. Since I'm allergic to exercise, literally, (or I tell myself that), I'm simply amazed by the passion, dedication, and shear determination Olympic athletes have in their DNA. And I love those Olympic Canadian Red Mittens.

On Sunday, it's Valentine's Day. And while it's extra special if you have a sweetheart, it's also a time to remind everyone you love that you love them. You can send a free e-greeting (with a free trial) from American Greetings. And don't forget in all the love sharing to give yourself a little R & R to show how much you love you~think bubble bath, chocolate, and a good movie.

Sunday kicks-off the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Tiger. It lasts 15 days, so make a point to have a little Chinese food and check out some of the other traditions. Who knows, they just might bring you a little extra luck this year.

And finally Fat Tuesday, begins on February 16th. I can only imagine the extra energy surrounding Mardi Gras with the recent New Orleans Saints Super Bowl win. Not going to New Orleans, or the multitude of other celebrating cities? You can still celebrate by cooking up some of Rachael Ray's recipes, throwing some beads, and maybe wearing your favorite mask (you can make one with construction paper, glitter, beads, ribbon, and other bling stuff).

Have a happy week celebrating something...and keep us posted of your happy celebration.
